Volunteer Opportunity: Marys Peak Conifer Pull!

Please join the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) at the Marys Peak summit for our spring conifer sapling pull. This is a great opportunity to see one of Oregon’s most spectacular sites, meet new friends and help preserve a truly unique ecosystem. Mid-elevation prairies are continually threatened by conifer encroachment and invasive non-native species. Removing these species is critical for the preservation and maintenance of this special place.

When: Saturday, June 11, 2022 between 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

Where: Marys Peak (about 45 minutes from Corvallis)

Work to be completed: Hand pulling conifer saplings from the summit meadows

What to bring: Full lunch, water, closed toed shoes, jacket (Marys Peak can get windy) and preferably long pants. All volunteers (or parent/guardian if volunteer is a youth) must fill out IAE’s volunteer release form and bring it with you to the event. No special skills are required for this work, just good attitudes and smiles! IAE will provide gloves (but you may want to bring your own gloves to ensure you have some that fit). Work will be completed on summit meadows and occasional steep slopes and there will be lots of walking. Bring your own vehicle or ride with us.

RSVP: If you are interested in volunteering (large and small groups are welcome to join) and would like to know more about this opportunity please contact Rolando Beorchia at [email protected].  Please make sure to RSVP so we can be certain to bring sufficient gloves for the day.  You are welcome to meet at the Marys Peak summit parking at 9am or meet at the IAE office (563 SW Jefferson Ave.) at 8:00 am to carpool to the site.
