Please join the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) for a volunteer planting event at Fir Butte in the West Eugene Wetlands this fall. Fir Butte is an 18-acre property owned by the Bureau of Land Management which is a critically important site for the federally threatened Fender’s blue butterfly and its host plant, Kincaid’s lupine. In fact, it hosts the largest population of both species in the world.
We will be planting approximately 1,000 Tolmie star-tulip (Calochortus tolmiei) bulbs, 200 Oregon sunshine (Eriophyllum lanatum) plugs, 250 narrowleaf onion (Allium amplectens) bulbs, 400 Oregon geranium (Geranium oreganum) crowns, 300 toughleaf iris (Iris tenax) seedlings, and 300 barestem biscuitroot (Lomatium nudicaule) tubers.
There will be limited attendance (10-12 volunteers) for this event, so please RSVP soon to reserve your spot. Only 6 vehicles will be permitted in the parking area, so carpooling is highly encouraged!
- When: Friday, November 10, 2023 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Where: Fir Butte Road pull-off location, Lane County, Oregon.
- Work to be completed: Planting native plants at a critically important site for the Fender’s blue butterfly and its host plant, Kincaid’s lupine.
- What to bring: Bring lunch and water. Wear warm clothing, rain gear, hat, gloves, and boots that are waterproof if possible. Tools and gloves will be provided.This planting event will run rain or shine, so please bring rain gear and boots you are OK with getting muddy. All volunteers (or parent/guardian if the volunteer is a youth) must fill out IAE’s volunteer release form.
