Please join the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) for a volunteer planting event at Beazell Memorial Forest! Beazell Memorial Forest is 586 acres made up of riparian, conifer, oak, and upland prairie habitats.
We will be planting bulbs and bare root plants in some of the higher-elevation protected meadows that are not accessible to the public. In the morning, we will meet at the parking lot nearby—which has a public bathroom and plenty of room for parking. From there, IAE will drive volunteers up to the site for planting. We will be walking through, kneeling, and digging in uneven ground all day, so proper clothing and footwear is critical. We will be planting important nectar plants for early season butterflies including native strawberry (Fragaria virginiana and F. vesca), narrowleaf mule-ears (Wyethia angustifolia), mariposa lily (Calochortus tolmiei), and narrowleaf onion (Allium amplectens).
- When: Saturday, November 4, 2023 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
- Where: Beazell Memorial Forest Parking Lot, 37283 Kings Valley Hwy, Philomath, OR 97370 (44.652133, -123.425356).
- Work to be completed: Planting native bulbs and bare root plants in Beazell Memorial Forest.
- What to bring: Bring lunch and warm clothes. Tools and gloves will be provided. No experience necessary. This planting event will run rain or shine, so please bring rain gear and boots you are OK with getting muddy. All volunteers (or parent/guardian if the volunteer is a youth) must fill out IAE’s volunteer release form.
