Silverspot butterfly habitat restoration

6/1/2010

Institute for Applied Ecology has initiated a project to restore five acres of Oregon Silver Spot Butterfly (Speyeria zerene hippolyta

)  habitat near Cascade Head on the Oregon Coast.  The project is being lead by Dominic Maze, IAE Restoration Botanist, and involves native coastal prairie restoration, elimination of aggressive exotic plants, and re-establishment of native plant species important for the butterfly’s survival.

Overheard

"Volunteers are the backbone, heart, and soul of the restoration movement. And whatever the eventual results of their labors may be, working to revive damaged ecosystems is transforming and strengthening their relationship with the rest of nature."

-William K. Stevens, Miracle Under the Oaks
