Restoring Invasion-resistant Wet Prairies in the Willamette Valley
IAE/NPSO Intern publishes article about EPA funded restoration project
Wetlands and wet prairies provide vital ecosystem services such as water filtration, nutrient cycling, wildlife habitat and flood control. In 1972, wetland areas became nationally protected under the Clean Water Act which enforces a policy of “no net loss”. Despite these regulations, we continue to see a decline in wetland habitat by draining for agricultural and real estate development and flooding for recreational lakes. The policy of “no
net loss” permits the development of wetlands provided an area equivalent
in size is restored elsewhere. However, we currently have no foolproof method
of restoring degraded wetlands or even managing existing wetlands.
