Controlling the Invasive False Brome: Workshop 4/4/12

False brome workshop to be held in Portland, Oregon

April 4th, 2012

False brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) is an invasive grass species that is rapidly expanding in the Pacific Northwest. This exotic perennial is native to Europe, Asia and North Africa and is invading habitats in western Oregon at an alarming rate. It is capable of completely dominating understory and open habitats to the exclusion of native species.

False brome is currently limited in distribution in the Portland Metro area. However, if prevention and control measures aren’t quickly established, false brome is poised to drastically alter natural areas in the Portland Metro region and to negatively affect native habitat, recreation, and ecosystem function and services for years to come.

The City of Portland will be hosting the 2012 False Brome Working Group (FBWG) at Leach Botanical Gardens on April 4th. The FBWG will be addressing the ecology, management and control of false brome with valuable lessons learned from the Willamette Valley and from current research being performed at Portland State University. Space is limited.
