Special seminar by Brophy at Hatfield Marine Science Center
At 2:30pm on Monday, May 16, 2011, Laura Brophy addressed the topic of "Estuarine Wetland Responses to Climate Change" during a special seminar at the HMSC Visitor Center, Hennings Auditorium, Newport, Oregon.
. A description of Ms. Brophy's presentation follows:
How will Pacific Northwest estuarine wetlands respond to sea level rise and climate change? Laura Brophy, Director of the Estuary Technical Group at the Institute for Applied Ecology, will discuss her recent work related to this question. She examines the "big picture" of coastal geomorphology, climate, salinity regimes, and habitat distribution, as well as site-specific monitoring data on linkages between ecosystem drivers and biotic responses. Together, these patterns help us understand how climate change may affect our coastal wetlands, and prepare for those changes. Ms. Brophy's talk will draw from her extensive field experience, including monitoring at over 30 tidal wetland restoration and reference sites on the Oregon coast; compilation of a reference conditions database for least-disturbed tidal wetlands in Oregon; and whole-estuary tidal wetland mapping and assessments completed for the Necanicum, Nehalem, Yaquina, Alsea, Siuslaw, and Umpqua estuaries.
