Linus Pauling Middle School

Marys River Natural Area, City of Corvallis Parks

At Linus Pauling, we are working with middle school students to restore Marys River Natural Area. This fall, the entire sixth grade took a field trip to Marys River where they learned about basketry, heard Native American stories, and planted bulbs and shrubs. The students will have another field trip this spring to plant more shrubs and grasses at their site.

Basketry
Linus Pauling sixth graders learn about Native American basketry techniques during a field trip in December 2010.
Overheard

"Volunteers are the backbone, heart, and soul of the restoration movement. And whatever the eventual results of their labors may be, working to revive damaged ecosystems is transforming and strengthening their relationship with the rest of nature."

-William K. Stevens, Miracle Under the Oaks
