Rachel Newton

Rachel Newton

Rachel began her professional botanical career as an herbarium assistant at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.  Her graduate research at the University of Wyoming focused on floristic inventories of wetlands throughout the state.  Her later work included a vegetative assessment of the Rio Grande Headwaters in Colorado and the restoration of a mountain valley marsh in Jackson Hole.  Although she prefers working in wetland habitats (alpine fens, desert playas, and most recently, vernal pools and coastal salt marshes), Rachel has a soft spot for the flora of semi-arid intermountain basins.

When not walking around and looking at plants as part of her job at IAE, Rachel enjoys walking around and looking at plants, reading, and laughing at her own jokes.

Overheard

"Volunteers are the backbone, heart, and soul of the restoration movement. And whatever the eventual results of their labors may be, working to revive damaged ecosystems is transforming and strengthening their relationship with the rest of nature."

-William K. Stevens, Miracle Under the Oaks
