Ian Silvernail

Ian

Ian currently works for IAE as Project Leader for the RARE Partnership, guiding plant propagation and rare species reintroduction projects with students from local schools.  He received as B.S. in Biology and Spanish from Willamette University in 1999 and an M.S. in Botany from Oregon State University in 2008, where he focused on rare plant ecology and recovery.  He has held field jobs emphasizing salmon and rockfish populations on the Oregon coast, small mammal diversity in the Blue Mountains, lichens and bryophytes in the Cascades, and rare plant populations throughout Oregon.  He has also worked in ecological education, including several seasons as a naturalist and gardener at the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center and two years developing a school-yard native plant garden and education program.  Away from IAE, he works to restore his old home, collaborates with family to support their organic vegetable operation, Rainshine Family Farm, and wanders widely in the rain in search of fruiting fungi.

Overheard

"Volunteers are the backbone, heart, and soul of the restoration movement. And whatever the eventual results of their labors may be, working to revive damaged ecosystems is transforming and strengthening their relationship with the rest of nature."

-William K. Stevens, Miracle Under the Oaks
